Handcuffing Kids in School?
You know what? When I was a kid, you NEVER saw a kid being hauled out of school by the police. You wouldn’t see a kid in handcuffs. When I was a kid, and one of us gave the teachers trouble, we got a paddling. I’ll never forget Mr. Nulph’s paddle, a large thick hunk of wood with a hole in the middle and duct-tape around the handle. That thing was effective, and so was the discipline in the school.
Now, the schools can’t administer corporal punishment, and the kids know it. The kids know they can act up with impunity, and the worst punishment they’re likely to receive is being able to take a few days off from school.
Don’t bemoan the arrest of a 5 year old, because she was handcuffed. Bemoan the arrest of that 5 year old because she should have gotten a whipping, and didn’t.

and my parents would’ve been doing a serious march up that sidewalk and have gotten all over me like white on rice. so would all but a very few of the parents. my friends and i feared going home with a note in hand. we knew we were in for it. being disrespecteful just wasn’t an option. i’m a teacher and there are increasing numbers of parents who don’t expect their children to behave and fault the teachers when they don’t. that little girl knew exactly what she was doing and was very good at it. her mother’s REFUSAL and EXCUSES for not coming to the school speaks volumes. my guess it’s all part of a definite pattern. poor kid.
I kind of think the mother should have gotten a whipping. Any child that out of control needs intervention, therapy of some sort. A 3 year old can throw a tantrum. A 5 year old who does has a serious developmental delay or has simply not beenm given the meotion education she should have been. Either way, her mom should have done something.
I think handcuffs were a bit extreme- but if Mama isn’t going to deal with her kid- then someone else has to, and why should they be loving in their correction. That was mom’s job. I feel badly for the child. 5 is so young.
